National Institute for Sustainable Development

NISD is registered, non-profit, secular, voluntary organisation working for rural development. Established in 1992, NISD is working for the uplift of rural poor masses, especially the Bidi Workers (Bidi is a locally made cigarette) and the displaced persons due to irrigation projects. Presently NISD’s project activities are concentrated in the rural areas of Ahmednagar & Pune districts of Maharashtra state.

NISD is being managed by a team of committed, dedicated, professionally qualified and experienced board of trustees. Though it is a young institution, NISD has achieved the distinction of becoming first voluntary organisation in Maharashtra working for unprivileged Bidi workers & the Displaced persons. NISD’s efforts are very well recognised & appreciated by the Government, national & international agencies.

WHERE NISD WORKS

As per the philosophy of NISD, this organization is committed to the upliftment of downtrodden people, who live in remote and neglected areas. In Sangamner Block of Ahmednagar district, NISD mainly works with the bidi rollers. Bidi industry is concentrated in this area and around 55 villages of Sangamner tahsil, we could see bidi factories. Most of the women population ( 95 % workers are women) involved in this hazardous work. We mainly work in the areas of the organization, education, health, child development and income generation.

Presently, NISD works in the 15 villages of Sangamner tahsil of Ahmednagar district, mainly for bidi rollers and their children. This area is on Pune-Nashik highway, 65 km from Nashik & 140 km from Pune.

In Pune district, we work for the Project Affected People who are displaced due to irrigation project. Here we concentrate more on organizing people, leadership development, Land development activities, income generation, hygiene, and sanitation.

Earlier NISD worked with the oustees of Dimbhe Irrigation project in the six resettlement sites. Now we started our work for the displaced people of Pimpalgaon Joge dam. This area is on Kalyan-Ahmednagar highway i.e 95 km from Kalyan, 105 km from Ahmednagar and 150 km from Pune.
